Delicious,
open-pollinated

(67 - 77 days)       Gordon Graham of Edmond OK grew a 7 pound 12 ounce whopper that tops the charts according to Guinness Book of World Records.  Gordon's prize tomato was an improved  beefsteak variety named Delicious that's advertised as being an excellent slicer.   Well it certainly was for Gordon, for his one tomato provided enough slices to top 21 sandwiches.
Although Gordon received honors from Miracle-Gro, his fertilizer of choice was manure provided by his pet rabbit.  He also attributes the size to the fact that when he himself is not talking and singing to his plants, he leaves the radio on to keep them company.  He observes that the plants nearest the radio grow the tallest.

Delicious was developed by Burpee's from the heirloom Beefsteak, a.k.a Ponderosa, by selecting seeds from the best fruit over more than a decade.  Many of the smooth, meaty, scarlet fruit weigh in at more than a pound.  Two and 3 pound tomatoes, or more, are not uncommon.  The bright red solid meat has few seeds, and the flavor lives up to its name.    Most fruit are crack free.  Indeterminate vines that need supporting produce continually until frost.
