Paragon,   rare Heirloom

(75 days).    One of the very first uniformly round and smooth yet good eating tomato.   It was the result of Alexander W. Livingston's two decades of selective plant breeding.   The Livingston Seed Company began commercial production in 1870.  The sweet flavored Paragons weigh 8 to 10 oz.  Before Paragon most tomatoes were smaller and sour.  Livingston's Paragon tomato became  a hit with the canning industry and home gardeners.  Subsequently NW Ohio became an important tomato growing and processing region.
